Self-worth and anger

Self Worth and Anger

Lack of self-worth is the single most prevalent issue presented by clients. Often this lack of self-worth is masked by anger, which is used as a way of protecting against actions by others that generate painful feelings of shame or humiliation. A look from a passing stranger on the street or criticism in class can easily cause deep emotional pain, which the client has learnt to deal with through anger – a more acceptable emotion. Others turn these feelings of low self esteem in on themselves and become depressed (deeply sad). In these cases clients will sometimes mask their sadness by appearing happy and smiling most of the time. Our task as counsellors is to help the client confront the underlying experiences that have led them to have such low self-valuing.

Mental illness is a result of misery, yet still we stigmatise it

Patients are being shunned in the mistaken belief they have biological defects. In fact the evidence shows that most have endured traumas.
